Day 4 - Khatmandu is a state of mind

Now that Jules is on the scene the feel of things has changed. The borderline surreal loneliness of solo travel has disappeared and been replaced by traveling teamwork. After breakfast, we wandered down to the square.

It was interesting for Jules to see how much damage the earthquake had caused and to compare things with his visit the week before the quake. Jules thought that the damage was not quite as widespread  as he had imagined from the news footage. We explored some areas he had not seen on his last visit, some of the deserted courtyards I had 'discovered' the evening before. It's surprising how few tourists are around, you mostly have things to yourself. After a coffee, I took Jules on a walk through the less touristed streets south of the square.

We found an amazing tiny shop (about the size of a small laundry) where the guy made his own softdrinks, complete with hand operated carbonation machine. The coolest thing was that all the bottles (hundreds of them) were 130 year old marble bottles, some from Nepal, some from England and some from Japan, all embossed with long forgotten company names, amazing. The guy agreed to sell us some when we returned from our trek.
The afternoon was spent relaxing, wandering around and making plans for the next few days.

The fuel shortage has only gotten worse and when we went out for dinner, we had to visit a number of restaurants before we found one that still had cooking gas, some are now down to cold food only. Let's hope it's sorted out soon, or it might become a problem.
