Day 6 - Petrol Blockade Blues

And so the blockade continues.....With almost no fuel entering the country and just about all the reserves gone, transport of any kind has pretty much come to a halt. The streets are empty, virtually no cars on the road, busses are parked in multi kilometer lines, abandoned and covered in dust, the vast majority of the taxi fleet has faced a similar fate. When I first arrived, the air of Thamel was filled with offers of 'taxi' and 'transport' , but now the streets are silent and it's close to impossible to find a cab. The little human powered rickshaws are now being used for the commercial transport of goods, hard work I'd imagine.

Jules and I walked a few k's today to the Monkey Temple, planing to then make our way to a national park. After leaving the temple, we headed in the direction of the park, way too far to walk, tried to find some sort of transport, anything would do, no luck. Defeated, we weaved our way through empty streets back to Thamel, lunch time.

Most eating places are no longer serving hot meals, those that still have gas, are reserving it for their dinner menu. There are still plenty of supplies, no shortages  and I'm sure things will be resolved before it gets dire. Tourist numbers have dwindled, I assume people are holding off on their trip.
Having said everything above, it still needs to be remembered, the people of Nepal are a flexible, easy going bunch, who now how to adapt and make the most of a situation. For us the shortages area minor inconvenience, for them it's a fact of life.
